One of the most common questions I get asked is, "How does your studio wall work?” In other words, how do I hang all these different sized paintings on my painting wall? So today, I thought I would show you. I also share a tip about these 6" x 18" blocks of wood that hold my larger paintings off the ground. In most artist studios, old rickety paint cans are doing this job, but I find the wood blocks more stable and quick to set up, especially if you are alone in the studio. You can get them at a

Finishing up some smaller paintings has been more challenging than usual. Since my Achilles surgery, I haven’t been able to stand and step back the way I normally would. Working too close makes it harder to see what’s really going on. One thing that’s helped is snapping a photo and viewing it on my screen. It gives me just enough distance to notice the subtleties and make better decisions. Sometimes that shift in perspective makes all the difference. | Nicholas Wilton

I use the walls in my studio to hold the various size paintings I am working on instead of easels. I basically put screws gridded out on the walls and leave about 1/2” exposed to hang the panels from. It is a super clean uncluttered way to set up a studio. 🔥 How do you support your art when making it? | Nicholas Wilton

We just finished painting the whole studio white: floors, walls, everything. But these support blocks... I couldn’t bring myself to paint over them. They’re covered in years of drips, color, and layers of old paintings. I use them constantly to prop up work, adjust height, or just keep things off the floor. They’re nothing fancy—6 inches by 6 inches, about 20 inches long—but they’re better than any paint can or crate. I’ve got about ten of them, and honestly, they’ve become part of the story of

I never overly focus on one painting when building a new body of work for a show. Instead I restrain the urge to finish anything. The longer I can stand staying in the uncertain, experimental stage the better the outcome. It’s what I coach but also what I practice, but it takes a degree of discipline to resist going after results too soon. Does this make sense to you? | Nicholas Wilton

Today I was working on this painting. I kept going back and forth between being tight and then letting go and just letting the paint do what it wants. I realized after thinking it should be only one way that actually it can be both. I need both states in my art. It’s how I express this contrast that makes my work mine. It’s a confusing thing that I am still learning. I wonder if there are others who share this challenge. Do you know what I am talking about? I would love to hear in the Comments.

Don’t think, just move. The beginning isn’t about precision… it’s about energy. Speed wakes up the canvas and the artist. Once something’s there, then you can respond, refine, and build. Let your hand outrun your head. Save this for later as a reminder to move quick… | Nicholas Wilton

The goal is something that feels quiet at first glance, but holds your attention when you step in closer. This painting doesn’t rely on strong value contrast. There aren’t big darks and lights to pull you in. Instead, I’m leaning on the subtler tools: clean whites, texture, line, opacity, and transparency. Without the usual contrast, those elements have to do more of the heavy lifting. | Nicholas Wilton

Not with thunder, but with truth. Not with noise, but with knowing. This is that moment. The Opening is not just the title of a show. It’s a threshold born fr

There’s something essential about spaciousness. Both in your environment and your mind. The open wall, the light from above, the quiet in between brushstrokes… it all helps you stay connected to what matters. This kind of space lets you feel the work more clearly. It gives the art room to become what it wants to be. | Nicholas Wilton

Every great movie star needs support to really shine. The colors in your paintings are no different. Help your awesome colors pop even more by adding something different next to them. Saturated next to unsaturated. Bright next to dark. It’s all about differences! | Nicholas Wilton

Here’s something I don’t talk about much: the thickness of my paintings. As the size of the painting increases, I also increase the depth of the panel. It’s completely subjective, but to me, a larger painting with more depth feels more substantial. It creates a kind of physical presence that matches the scale of the work. When something is big but thin, it can feel a little too light, like it’s missing weight or intention. For me, thickness adds to the statement the painting is making. Just some

It takes a mix of intuition and intellect to walk up to a ten-foot painting and tear into it with confidence. Breakthroughs happen when you stop hesitating, trust what you’re feeling, and let yourself go all in. | Nicholas Wilton

The struggle you’re going through isn’t a problem, it’s part of the process. I make mistakes all the time. But I’ve learned that showing up with both humility and confidence is powerful. They’re opposites, like black and white in a strong painting—and it’s the tension between them that makes everything work. What parts of you are showing up in your art right now? | Nicholas Wilton

Two canvases. One rhythm. Working in multiples makes everything easier. If one canvas feels stuck, the other keeps things moving. There’s less pressure, more freedom. They talk to each other, bounce ideas back and forth. The rhythm that starts on one often finishes on the other. It’s not about duplication… it’s about staying in flow. | Nicholas Wilton

(Nicholas Wilton with Jennie Oppenheimer) How can we learn to recognize and use our intuition when making art? I believe intuition is the cornerstone of all powerful, authentic art. But even so, it can be hard to not only recognize but to trust our intuition. How do we know, what we intuitively know is right? I couldn’t figure this out so I thought I would ask someone who might. Jennie Oppenheimer has deep experience with intuition. She is the founder of Soulio, a company that teaches people how

It's easy to fall in love with a part of your art, even though it doesn't work in relationship to the rest of the art. I used to avoid fixing it because, well, it’s hard to let go, right? But avoiding it only kept me stuck. Eventually, I always had to make the change—so now I try to do it sooner rather than later. It's tough, but so freeing. Anyone else been there? | Nicholas Wilton

At various stages I glaze my paintings. This has a way of bringing up the texture and harmonizing the color. It also is such a different motion than painting so it feels great. The painting changes quickly when glazing. | Nicholas Wilton
