In the early 1990s a Wampanoag woman named Jessie Little Doe Baird began having vivid dreams of ancestors speaking a long silent language no longer heard since its last native speaker died in the mid nineteenth century. Moved by these visions she earned a masters in linguistics from MIT and studied ancient documents, including a Bible translated in 1663, to rebuild the language. In 1993 she co founded a language reclamation project that now allows children to grow up speaking Wopanak every day.
