Medgar Evers was a pioneering civil rights activist, NAACP field officer, and distinguished WWII veteran. Targeted for his civil rights work, Evers was shot and killed in his own driveway in 1963 - today is the anniversary of his tragic death. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery, in front of a crowd of 3,000. In 1964, two all-white juries allowed the murderer, Byron De La Beckwith, to go free. Civil rights veteran Medgar Evers dedicated his life to advancing the cause for civil rights for Mississippians and all Americans. As the state’s first field secretary for the NAACP, Evers was involved in every major civil rights action until his assassination in the driveway of his home in Jackson #OTD in 1963. His widow, Myrlie Evers-Williams, who continues to preserve Medgar’s work in advocating for civil rights, once stated in her own words, “You can kill a man, but you can’t kill an idea.”
