UPDATE: We were a little concerned when our big brown bat wasn't eating right away. As it turns out, he didn't care for the small mealworms, he wanted the super sized mealworms. Juicy! 😋 What a finicky bat. | Nirvana Ridge Wildlife Refuge

We continue to learn a lot about the big brown bats on the Westmoreland Land Trust Schwarz bat colony camera. Last night the mom's left the bat pups alone for about 5 minutes when they went out to feed. Typically they will leave one mother behind to be a babysitter. We coutned 26 bat pups last night! This big brown bat boy came in today after smacking into the Chase building in Fort Wayne. He's doing well so far after warming up and getting some fluids, so we're hopeful he'll make a full recovery. He'll be overwintered and released in the spring when the bugs return. Look at that cute face! #bigbrownbat #bat #wildliferehab #werlingwildlife | Werling Wildlife Rehabilitation & Education Center

Big brown bat eating mealworms 🦇 what more to say? We get in 30 or so bats a year. Mostly orphaned big brown bats. We have also received all ages of red bats and sometimes a hoary bat or silver haired bat. We have 9 bat species native to New Jersey. Some are year-round residents and hibernate here. Others migrate in winter. | Woodlands Wildlife Refuge

Sound on! Our big brown bat enjoyed some mealworms for lunch the other day. This bat still needs to be fed by hand by our Animal Care staff. Big brown bats are insectivores and will be coming out of hibernation soon. They typically go into hibernation around November and remain there until spring when insects are plentiful again. #bigbrownbat #mealwormcrunch | Squam Lakes Natural Science Center

We have admitted several big brown bat infants in the past few days, all have dropped from their mothers due to environmental conditions or their mother sadly not returning and they become dehydrated and fall to the ground where they are discovered. They require very specialized nutrition, temperature and humidity, and we are so lucky to have the knowledge and dedication of Sam Cox, our Wildlife Specialist/ Intern Coordinator who has dedicated research and training on bats including a visit to a

SUNDAY, SUNDAY, SUNDAY! Reigning champion Triple B (big brown bat) faces off against Mothkind (the poplar sphinx moth) in a SANDSTONE CAGE MATCH! Two critters enter, ONE CRITTER LEAVES! They say wrestling isn’t real, but we promise IT DOESN’T GET REALER THAN THIS! Lives are on the line! Will the bat taste the sweet flavor of victory, or will the moth live to see another day? See the breathtaking ending on pay-per-view! Just kidding, WE DON’T HAVE THE ENDING! It was 3 am and the guy recording had

This adult male big brown Bat came to our facility last week from Richmond Ky very dehydrated, starving and very cold. He also has a hurt back right foot and his right wing is torn. He is doing much better. He has gained some weight and he is now eating good. We still have him on antibiotics and pain meds. He is out of the critical stage and in a guarded stage now. This adorable big brown bat is one of ten bats that we are currently caring for. Some previous posts have discussed our bat patients, but we haven't shown much of the actual care process! Our bats came in for a range of reasons. Some were found caught in sticky glue traps, while others chose insufficient roosting spots to hibernate and were affected by cold stress. Several of our bats are in our artificial hibernator, which is essentially a bat cooler that maintains a constant temperature to mim

Pricilla, our Big Brown Bat 🦇, getting her fur brushed after her breakfast of mealworms this morning. I see a little spec of one left in her coat lol. Bats love getting brushed! She took her first test flight ✈️ last night and did pretty good. She’s learning to use her wings to get to her food now (video coming soon) We’ve had her since she was a little pup 🐶. Hate to see her leave, but it will be such a proud moment. I make sure that upon release they know how and what they need to eat becaus

Baby bat season started last week, and we have been quite busy. This is just one of the 7 current big brown bat pups in care. Baby bats (called pups) are fed every 2–3 hours, depending on their age, species, and condition. Bat pups require specific heat, humidity, fluids, and milk formula to support healthy growth. Because of this we kindly ask that finders do not attempt offer any fluids or supplemental milk. We also discourage raising baby bats. There best chance of survival is with momma bat,

Happy International Bat Appreciation Day! Today we celebrate bats of all shapes and sizes including our native Big Brown Bat seen here enjoying a tasty snack while in care in our Wildlife Medical Clinic. Bats are not only unique in that they arre our only truly flighted mammals, but they are also a critical species for ecosystem health. A single Big Brown Bat can catch upwards of 1,000 mosquito sized insects in an hour of feeding. Multply that by the size of a healthy breeding population of bats

Pennsylvania Bat Conservation and Rehabilitation on Instagram: "Dinner time with Doyle. It’s also National Wildlife Day! Doyle is a big brown bat that arrived in 2019. When Doyle came into care, we had already exhausted our efforts to care for several little brown bats suffering from white nose syndrome. Unfortunately, we lost many little brown bats that winter. Feeling defeated we were unsure if Doyle would survive the devastating disease, we started a new topical treatment. Doyle had severe wi
