October 9th is International Print Day! We needed to post another video of us showing printing a printing press with another printing press. In this video, Alex letterpress printed an image depicting the first printing press in what would later become the United States, which was Stephen Daye’s wooden common press from 1639. This was printed with pink oil base ink using a 3x5 Kelsey Excelsior tabletop printing press. 130 prints were made during this press run. These are prints we hand out to vis

Throughout the month of June, we have been sharing videos from our print shop exhibit demonstrating letterpress printing with multiple colors of ink. For this one, we wanted to see how our Museum appeared in rainbow. In this video, Howard letterpress printed an image from a modern photo engraving based on a lithograph of Sacramento’s City Hall and Waterworks building from 1857. Our museum is housed in a reconstruction of that building, which was originally built at the corner of I and Front Stre

Using a tabletop printing press to print an image of a printing press. This letterpress cut was printed in reflex blue rubber base ink. The image depicts a wooden common press from the late 1600s through the 1700s. This photo engraving certainly isn’t that old though. The press used in the video is a 3×5 Kelsey Excelsior tabletop printing press. About 50 were printed in this press run. Why was Jared printing these? These are prints we give out to our viewers when they stop by the Sacramento Hist

We often show videos using a tabletop printing press but behind each video, a lot of copies are made. In this press run, Jared letterpress prints an electrotype of the California State Capitol in the 1890s from the Lewis Winter Collection, an electrotype of a locomotive made in the 1930s, and the Howard Powered photo engraving made a couple years ago. This video shows inking a 3x5 Kelsey Excelsior tabletop printing press with black rubber base ink and printing a copy of each. Jared didn’t print

One of the frequently asked questions we get from viewers of our videos and visitors to the print shop at our museum is, “Is that a printing press?” The correct answer is yes! The term “printer” would be incorrect because that term refers to the person who operates the machine. In this video, Howard letterpress printed “YES” in our largest wood type to answer the question. Our Washington hand press was manufactured in 1852 by the Charles Foster & Brother Company in Cincinnati, Ohio. #typography

We often demonstrate a lot of printing in our print shop exhibit at the Sacramento History Museum, but not many people get to see the cleaning process. In this video, Jared shows the full cleaning process sped up a bit because the full video is almost 8 minutes long. We use 1K kerosene as a solvent to clean the ink off of our 10x15 Chandler & Price Gordon-style jobbing press. This was after a press run where we letterpress printed 300 copies for our 2025 museum holiday card with a mix of red and

In our print shop exhibit at the Sacramento History Museum, we like to discuss history while letterpress printing. However, sometimes we like to just highlight the sounds of the printing process. In this video, Jared letterpress printed an image depicting the first printing press in what would later become the United States, which was Stephen Daye’s wooden common press from 1639. This was printed in rhodamine red rubber base ink using a 4x6 Golding Official #2 tabletop printing press. 70 prints

K is for Kluge Press The Muskegon Heritage Museum’s Print Shop includes hand and foot operated printing presses that require an individual operator to place the paper stock, press the impression and remove the completed prints. The technology of the early 20th Century would be familiar to Ben Franklin. In 1919, two Norwegian immigrant brothers developed the first successful hands-free paper setter. They designed a vacuum system that could place, register and remove stock on its own. The company

January 6th is National Technology Day! It is a day to recognize technological innovations of the past, how technology helps to change the world today, and how it can affect the future. We get a lot of questions from viewers about how we get ready to print in our print shop exhibit at the Sacramento History Museum. Well, today is a great day to cover that because September 21st is National Get Ready Day! For today, we are showing every step of the letterpress printing process. The video begins with Howard entering the shop and putting on his apron and sleeve protectors. Then we move onto Howard rolling out black rubber base ink on the ink stone. This is done to create an even l
