Flanders Field American Cemetery is the only World War I American military cemetery located in Belgium. The 6.2-acre cemetery in western Belgium holds the graves of 368 American dead from the Great War. Their headstones are aligned in four symmetrical areas around the white stone chapel that stands in the center of the cemetery. Inside are the engraved names of 43 service members missing in action. Graceful trees and shrubbery frame the burial area and screen it from passing traffic. At the ends

Have you ever visited Tyne Cot Cemetery? With nearly 12,000 buried soldiers, this memorial is the largest Commonwealth cemetery in the world, a sad claim to fame. Dizzying rows of white gravestones line the grass, overlooking sweeping views of the now peaceful countryside. The site’s surrounding wall is a Memorial to the Missing, bearing the names of nearly 35,000 men from the UK and NZ with no known grave. | Flanders Fields 14-18

“In Flanders fields the poppies blow, Between the crosses, row on row” - The Countess of Wessex reads ‘In Flanders Field’ at today’s Metropolitan Police Service Service to commemorate #Armistice100. 374 Police Officers and 20 Civilian Members of the Metropolitan Police lost their lives in the First World War. #LestWeForget The poem was written by Major John McCrae, who was serving in the Canadian Field Artillery, when a young Lieutenant in his Regiment, Alexis Helmer was killed on 2 May 1915 dur

If you’ve visited a WW1 cemetery, you’ve seen it. The Cross of Sacrifice. Standing on cemeteries starting from 40 graves. A sword carved into a tall stone cross. Not marking one grave, but standing for thousands. You’ll find it at Tyne Cot, Perth, Essex Farm and many more. It doesn’t speak loudly. It doesn’t have to. #CrossOfSacrifice #WW1Cemeteries #FlandersFields #YpresSalient #WW1 #Remembrance #VisitFlanders #BattlefieldTours | Visit Flanders Fields

Today in 1917, the British detonated 19 mines beneath the German lines in The Battle of Messines. The explosion underneath Hill 60 blew a 60 ft deep and 260 ft wide crater. Numbered hills like this one, got their names from the elevation above sea level. By the evening of the same day, New Zealand, Australian and British troops had successfully taken the Messines ridge-line. Today, Hill 60 is a memorial site, and nearby, Caterpillar Crater is also evidence of The Battle of Messines. 🎥- Hill 60

At Langemark, one of four German WWI cemeteries in Flanders, oak trees—Germany’s national symbol—shape the landscape and the memory it holds. Oak-paneled walls at the entrance bear the names of over 6,000 fallen soldiers, while bronze panels encircle a mass grave believed to hold more than 17,000. Planted throughout the grounds, the oaks now cast deep shade, offering a quiet, contemplative space. For many, Langemark evokes sorrow; for others, it reveals how cultural symbols of mourning deepen ou

One of the smallest cemeteries in Flanders holds some of the most surprising graves. Zillebeke Churchyard contains several burials of British nobility. Young aristocrats who volunteered, fought on the frontline like everyone else, and were buried here after falling in the Ypres Salient. It is a unique reminder that the First World War reached every level of society. No title could shield you from the front. #ZillebekeChurchyard #FlandersFields #WW1History #BritishNobility #WesternFront #YpresSal

Still to this day, the soil of Flanders Fields continues to reveal the devastation of the First World War, with on average, the remains of 22 soldiers (of all nationalities) recovered from the landscape each year. The recovery of soldiers is a specialist job in the field of conflict archaeology. Every detail could provide a vital clue to help reveal the soldier’s identity. Sometimes remains are found during archaeological excavations or sometimes through everyday activities such as farming or ro

Across Flanders Fields lie hundreds of military cemeteries. Some large. Some small. All sacred. These are not monuments to victory. They are places of rest. Young men from across the world lie here, many far from home, many never identified. We guide through these cemeteries with care and respect, because understanding the First World War means standing where its cost is written in stone. 📍 Private WWI battlefield tours from Bruges 🌐 https://visitflandersfields.com #FlandersFields #WWICemeteri
