TURN UP THE VOLUME and listen to this beaver chewing on a tree. In the first part of the video, the beaver is scraping off all the old, dry bark, which is not really edible. Once the bark is removed, the beaver eats the cambium layer, which is the layer of newly growing tree just beneath the bark that has not yet turned into wood. Because the cambium layer has an actively growing molecular structure, it is soft and nutritious. Cambium is a very important part of a beaver’s diet. #beavers #wildli

Throwback Thursday! This video of a beaver chewing a chunk off of a fallen tree is from back in April of 2021. A few times in the video you get a decent view of its teeth slicing through the wood as it chews. #wildlifephotography #beavers | Mike’s photos and videos of beavers

Beaver chewing on a big tree! This video features a beaver chewing on the big tree in an effort to bring the tree down. I don’t have any footage of the tree coming down because they finished it off during the night. #WildlifeWednesday #beaver #beavers | Mike’s photos and videos of beavers

TGIB! Thank God It’s Beaver! I was asked for a close-up video of a beaver chewing a tree. This is about as close-up to a wild beaver chewing you can hope for. At times in the video you can see the lower incisors carve through the wood. Remarkably, a beaver’s bite strength isn’t off the charts. A beaver can bite at 180 psi … more than a human (88psi), but less even than a typical dog (300 psi). They can do this because their lower incisors are incredibly sharp. EDIT: (Since many are asking) Beave

In this beaver video, I taped a beaver chewing through this entire tree in about ten minutes. I started recording almost at the first bite. Enjoy! #beavers #animals #funnyanimals | Mike’s photos and videos of beavers

This beaver was chewing a chunk off of a fallen tree. When I get close up you get a good look at the lower incisors working like a chisel to push through the wood. #wildlifephotography #beavers | Mike’s photos and videos of beavers

This is a fun video that I filmed a few years ago of a beaver chewing on a chunk of cambium off of a large tree. Cambium, aka inner bark, is the layer of newly growing wood just under the bark. It is basically the new ring of growth on a tree. Because it is actively growing it is soft and nutritious, and it is one of the most important food sources for a beaver. Once the cambium turns to wood the beavers don’t eat it. #beavers #beaver #wildlifephotography | Mike’s photos and videos of beavers

How Things Really Work on Instagram: "Beavers stop chewing to listen and feel for internal cracks because every bite changes the tree’s balance. As wood fibers weaken, vibrations travel through the trunk, warning the beaver that the fall direction is shifting. By pausing, they detect these subtle cues and adjust their position so the tree drops safely away from them. This behavior is pure survival engineering. Their front teeth deliver huge bite force, but without these pauses, they’d risk being
