The National Hurricane Center continued to keeps its focus Friday on what had been Category 4 major Hurricane Helene as it moved inland and dropped to a tropical depression, but also was keeping tabs on newly formed Tropical Storm Joyce and Hurricane Isaac in the Atlantic and two more systems with a chance to develop into the season’s next tropical depression or storm.

Tropical Storm Helene threatens Florida, placing most of the state on high alert as it is one of the strongest storms to make landfall in the United States in over a year, according to CNN.

Tropical Storm Helene has formed in the Caribbean Sea, and forecasters say it will strengthen into a major hurricane.

The latest update from the National Hurricane Center shows a rapidly weakening Helene with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph. Helene will continue to weaken until it loses all tropical characteristics over the Kentucky/Tennessee border this weekend.

Helene’s storm clouds are expected to become better organized with a more defined rotation as it enters a favorable environment.

The forecast refers to the potential for rapid intensification over the Gulf of Mexico, which is when a storm gains 35 mph or more in a 24-hour period.

Tropical Storm Joyce formed Friday morning in the east-central Atlantic Ocean. Joyce is forecast to stay over the open ocean and is not a threat to the local area. There are currently three named storms in the Atlantic Basin.
