An approaching typhoon bringing strong winds and torrential rainfall to Taiwan killed one person and injured dozens of others over the past few days and led to the evacuation of thousands from low-lying or mountainous areas.

Taiwan announced that two people were killed and at least 70 others were injured due to weather conditions related to Typhoon Krathon.

Taiwan shut down schools and closed its financial markets on Wednesday as Typhoon Krathon pounded its south and east with torrential rains and winds ahead of its expected landfall. Krathon, packing sustained wind speeds of 162 kilometers (100 miles) per hour and gusts of up to 198 kph,
