ANNA MARIA ISLAND, Fla. (WWSB) - Thousands on Anna Maria Island are dealing with extreme damage of their property, personal items, vehicles, and boats, after Hurricane Helene’s wrath ripped through the coast.

After hitting Florida’s Gulf Coast, Helene tore through the Southeast, unleashing historic rain and flooding in parts of Georgia and the Carolinas and leaving dozens of people dead and millions without power.

Sarasota and Manatee County residents are still discovering the scope of damage caused by Hurricane Helene, especially on the barrier islands, where officials were still clearing roads, restoring utilities and checking for any public safety issues before gradually allowing residents to return.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced that he will hold a press conference on Anna Maria Island Saturday afternoon, two days after Hurricane Helene battered Manatee County.
