Canada marks the fourth annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation today. The day is a time to honour and remember Indigenous children who died at residential schools, the survivors, their families and communities.

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation:

Memorials abound on the fourth National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada and in parts of the United States on Monday, Sept. 30. The federal holiday became official in 2021.

Every year on Sept. 30, commemorative events are held to remember the Indigenous children who died while being forced to attend residential schools, those who survived and the families and communities who are still affected by the lasting trauma.

Since the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a federal statutory holiday, Government of Canada offices and buildings will be closed. This includes services like Canada Post, the Canada Revenue Agency, passport offices and Service Canada.

This year, we’d like to highlight an Indigenous Artist, Jamin Zuroski (tlaliskasu). Jamin has created an Indigenous design for the Canada Soccer community and all peoples of our country, in honour of the Canadian Residential School Survivors, their families and the students who didn’t make it home.
