In Walter Salles' Oscar-shortlisted film I'm Still Here, set in 1970 at the height of Brazil's military dictatorship, Fernanda Torres plays an extraordinary mother: Eunice Paiva, who was left to raise five children alone after the disappearance of her activist husband Rubens (played by Selton Mello).

The Brazilian actress portrays Eunice Paiva, a lawyer and the widow of Rubens Paiva, a federal representative killed by the military dictatorship in 1971.

Torres is the daughter of actor Fernanda Montenegro, who was previously nominated in the same category in 1999 for Central Station. She was nominated for an Oscar for the same role, eventually losing to Gwyneth Paltrow. Montenegro was the first Brazilian female actor to be nominated, with her daughter now becoming the second.
