Rideshare drivers in the Twin Cities joined lawmakers and labor leaders at the Minnesota State Capitol on Tuesday to announce a push for unionization rights.

Minnesota drivers for Uber and Lyft are pushing to change state law to allow them to form a union, one year after a deal was struck to prevent companies from following through on a threat to leave the state.

A group of Minnesota ride-hailing service drivers is now pushing for the right to unionize after winning a minimum wage increase at the state Capitol last year. Drivers for services like Uber and Lyft are working with state lawmakers on legislation to allow them to vote on forming a union — something they currently can’t do because they are considered independent contractors under federal law.

Minnesota lawmakers are once again looking to expand worker protections for rideshare workers, this time with a bill that would allow them to unionize.

An SEIU spokesperson explained that since drivers are technically independent contractors and not employees, this right isn’t already afforded under state and federal law.

The Minnesota Legislature passed a sweeping bill in 2024 giving rideshare drivers a pay raise. Now, some of the drivers want to unionize.
