Chelsea face a bleak future in the Champions League next season as their new signings like Liam Delap and Joao Pedro could be prevented from playing.

Defender Bashir Humphreys and goalkeepers Kepa Arrizabalaga and Marcus Bettinelli have all departed for a combined sum of around £20m. That means Chelsea could need to recoup at least £90m to be certain of registering their summer signings.

As noted by The Times, Chelsea cannot register new players for next season’s Champions League squad unless they balance out the squad costs from “List A”, which is the last squad registered with UEFA for the second half of the Conference League campaign. The rule means any spending on new players must be balanced out by income from sales.
