GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — People in multiple counties are now reporting a chlorine smell and smoke spreading after a chemical plant fire in Rockdale County. A fire broke out Sunday morning at the Biolab facility on Old Covington Highway. Rockdale County remains under a shelter-in-place order.

Rockdale County is asking residents once again to shelter-in-place due to a plume banking down in the county. The new alert comes hours after the county had lifted a previous shelter-in-place order for a fire that broke out at the Biolab chemical plant on Sunday.

Conyers, a city of roughly 17,000, has been evacuated and surrounding Rockdale County, with a population of nearly 100,000, is under shelter-in-place guidance continuing into the early morning hours of Monday after a fire at a BioLab facility and resulting chemical plume.

A shelter-in-place advisory is extended in Rockdale County, Georgia, after a fire and chemical release erupted at a BioLab plant east of Atlanta. Thousands of residents in the city of Conyers were evacuated and the presence of chlorine has been confirmed by the EPA.
